Birthdays have always been very special in Team Unbreakable.

Money had consistently remained tight as a single parent living off of disability income, so sometimes we’d bargain: Presents or Party. I learned how to give pretty fun parties on an extremely tight budget so that I could still buy them a few things as a surprise. It may not have been Pinterest-worthy, but they always felt celebrated.

In my experience of working with other single-parents and with youth in the foster care system, I learned it was much more common to NOT celebrate birthdays, for a variety of reasons not unlike some of our own hurdles. This news bothered me; it broke my heart when I’d watch one child tell the story of their birthday extravaganza right next to a child who couldn’t even remember how they spent their last birthday.

We can’t change all circumstances, but we can still do our part to share the Light! This was Tuffmission’s first project, and very dear to my heart. If you feel like taking part, you can donate, book our services, and share our posts on social media!
